Through my work with Postiljon I got in contact with DJEPS, a four piece vocal band with additional instrumentalists. They asked me to record their next album, and I agreed. Working on the same principle as with Postiljon, we recorded the band in a living-room studio, with the control room in the (upgraded) garage. We set everything up on the Friday afternoon and had a microphone shoot-out that same evening, trying to find the best microphone for each singer. Thanks to Martijn Bos and Peter Boer we had a wide selection to choose from. They also provided some of the equipment used for the recording (we had a nice selection of tube-pre-amps).
On Saturday morning the rest of the band joined and we started recording. Not all the songs featured all the musicians, ranging from a full band (drums, bass, 2 guitars, keyboards, percussion, saxophone and 4 singers, to 4 singers and acoustic guitar). Especially the ‘smaller’ songs went very well, the songs with the complete band playing suffered a bit from ‘a lot of musicians in a small room’, resulting in a bit to much ‘spill’ for my comfort, but that is something I will have to try and fix during the mixing stage. The ‘smaller’ songs with the close harmony singing turned out very well and leaves us lot’s of room to create a nice sounding song.
All recordings were finished on Sunday round 18:30 and after removing all the equipment; we could enjoy a well deserved beer. I have done some pre-mixing, and we will have to record some additional vocals (we decided to not record the drummers vocals while drumming, to prevent spill, and re-record the backing vocals on one of the ‘larger’ songs because of to much spill), and after that go into the final mixing stage.
The recordings went well and resulted in their 3rd album called "dIVce/The Force"
