July 20th 2008, Loreley Festival (GE): Knight Area

This is an Open-Air festival on a friendly hill side near the river Rhein in Germany. We are scheduled to play on Sunday 12:30. First and last band will get a sound check, so that is us and the Neal Morse Band. Both bands are there at 10:30, but there is no crew or what so ever. They do not arrive until 11:30. We try to make the best of it until then, it is kind of fun because it is an all Dutch back-stage party: the backing band for Neal Morse is Dutch. By 12:15 Neal Morse is ready with the sound check, doors opened at 12:00. So we have 15 minutes to set up, do a line check and get ready. So I just get the faders ready and hope for the best. Fortunately it’s a large PA so not much influence from the stage. Sound is pretty good. At the end of the show the engineer asks whether that was the last song, and pulls all the faders and hits the mutes, just before I can say yes.

Then the band returns on stage: one band got cancelled and every band can now play 1 extra song. So there I am with all the faders down again. Gives me a chance to perform the same trick again :-)

July 5th 2008, The Peel, London (GB): Knight Area

After a long drive we arrived at The Peel. Went in and checked for the hall where we supposed to play. However we ended up in a Pole-dancing and strippers bar, seemed that The Peel was not only about music. Went out again with a beer and waited some more. Round 6 the engineer showed up and revealed a very small venue, we probably were only going to use the PA for vocals en keyboards. It was small and the sound was a bit of a problem getting right, but in the end I got a manageable kind of balance between the amplified stuff and the acoustic stuff. It was all very minimal, both light- and sound wise, but the audience loved the band, and the guys did a great job and played a good gig. At the FOH Island it was pretty crowded, Arie and I sharing about 3 feet by 4 feet of space to manoeuvre.

June 7th 2008, JJMusicHouse, Zoetermeer (NL): Knight Area

November 2nd 2008, Het Kasteel, Alphen a/d Rijn (NL): Knight Area

First Knight Area show as a quintet, Rinie decided to leave the band. Mark Smit will be taking over a lot of the guitar tracks on his Keytar keyboard.

October 12th 2008, De Wielepet, Monster (NL): Knight Area

It is the second time we are playing this venue, but the first time with our new light designer/engineer Arie Groen handling the lights. Sound wise: an old Yahama desk is there for the main act with a lot of lexicon outboard stuff, we are dumped on a Behringer desk
